One part of the house that often goes forgotten, but which can make a huge difference in day-to-day quality of life, is the garage. How nice would it be if the number of cars you could park in your garage was equal to its original capacity? Not to mention the relief you’d feel at finally having a little extra space—and a designated place for everything.
A clean, organized garage is also a safer garage. Read on to learn how to create more space, waste less time searching, and make your garage less of a hazard zone.
How to Get your Garage Back
- Don’t put pressure on yourself to do this all at once! Instead, make realistic goals that take on the challenge one task at a time.
- Go through your stuff and donate or sell items that are not, and will never again be, in use.
- Throw away or immediately fix broken items.
- Group like items together to ensure that future projects are easier because items can always be found.
- When deciding where items belong, try to keep the things that are frequently used in easy-to-reach places.
- Rethink the use of organization tools already used in other areas of your home—use a magnetic knife rack to hold paint brushes, or a mason jar to keep small items together.
- Make the best use of your walls by adding wall-mounts, shelves, and hooks whenever possible.
- Consider a storage loft for seasonal and other rarely used items.
- As with your medicine cabinet, throw away all expired items.
Garage Safety Tips
- Store all poisonous/toxic materials out of reach of children—the higher the better.
- Avoid storing ladders vertically. Instead, store them horizontally or in a closet so that children can’t climb them.
- Store sharp materials in a safe place out of the reach of children.
- Don’t overload shelves with clutter—no avalanches, please!
